Hello, Hola, Salut, Kon’nichiwa

If I were to choose a superpower among these three choices:

  • the ability to speak and understand any language
  • the ability to travel through time
  • the ability to make any two people agree with each other

It would have to be the ability to speak and understand any language. Why?

We live in a diverse and globalized world. Every profession deals with communicating with people from varied backgrounds, be it serving customers or settling business deals abroad. The ability to understand another human from a different country than you is great. I sometimes struggle to comprehend what my foreign professors are saying but I wish that the language barrier was not so wide. Hence, my adoration for polyglots.

Now why did I not choose to travel through time or make any two people agree with each other?

If I attain the ability to perform time travel and alter history, when something bad happens, I would feel like the duty is solely mine to make things right. Every event creates a domino effect, changing the future drastically. Who knows, changing something in the past may lead to you or me not even existing right now. Preventing something as terrible as the Holocaust could have potentially lead to something worse down the line. It’s like the movie Project Almanac. Saving one friend’s life could potentially threaten another’s. In my opinion, things happen for a reason so there is no need to play God.

Here is an amazing Twilight Zone episode related to time travel.

As far as making people agree, we have our own minds and are capable of deciding for ourselves what we wish to believe. The reason why we meet different people is to understand their points of view. Don’t be embarrassed if others don’t agree with your viewpoint. We must defend our ideologies and also open up our minds to welcome new information. If everyone had the same thoughts on everything, then why bother socializing? There would be no difference between us and robots. Then we would have no presidential election because the vote would be unanimous anyway. Difference is good and sometimes we just have to agree to disagree. That is the beauty of individuality.

Today’s post was inspired by the prompt: “If you’re like most of us, you need to earn money by working for a living. Describe your ultimate job. If you’re in your dream job, tell us all about it — what is it that you love? What fulfills you? If you’re not in your dream job, describe for us what your ultimate job would be.”

If you could choose a dream job or lifestyle , what would it be and why? Let me know in the comments below!
